On Samhain, Shadow Time yields to Dark Time. The days are clearly shorter than the night, and the sun lies low in the South. most of the day, casting long shadows on everything. There is Tradition that say all harvest must be taken before Samhain eve. On that night the Pooka travels through the fields taking nourishment from all plants still there. I have no idea what a Pooka looks like but I dont think I would like to meet it!
Spring and summer brought fruits and veggies but now locally what is left is now dying or rotting. No so long ago, as this bounty perished, other food sources needed to be found. Hunting began and the Great Hunter God begins his reign. The Great Mother Goddess of Bounty rests along with the seeds of next Spring.
This time of the year it is also believed that the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest. Samhain is the feast of the dead. Folks would leave a plate of food outside for the dearly departed. If there is enough food, I may do it. This year I will be lighting a candle to remember my Grandmother Katherine. She died last spring from many strokes and she was aged 90. She was a strong, powerful woman to me. When I small she kept me while my Mother worked at the VA. I feel my Dominance was spawned by watching her interact with my Grandmother and family. She taught me early on to take pride in myself and yes, she spoiled me rotten! I miss her greatly. She gave great hugs. I was strong for my family and didnt allow myself to cry for her at her burial, I cry for her now. But I also celebrate her memory. As long I remember, she lives on and she flows through my veins even now.
I will be giving candy out to the trick or treaters. Pop Rocks were a hit last year so I bought a bunch this year. Another reason I love Halloween.
Enjoy your Halloween aka Samhain! Let your creepy, freaky side out. Tonight you can be anything you want to be!
